BJU then and now...The Southern Baptist Convention

White Oak Baptist Church is located directly across the street from front campus. White Oak is affiliated with the Southern Baptist Convention (SBC). For this reason, students were never allowed to darken its door...until now. Dr. Lonnie Polson, the division chair of the communications department at BJU, recently became the senior pastor of White Oak. Jeffrey Stegall who is an associate professor in the theater arts department is now the Music director at White Oak. White Oak continues its affiliation with the SBC. As you would expect, White Oak is recommended to students (along with several other SBC churches) for service and worship.

Sherwood Baptist Church is an SBC church in Albany Georga. From this church came the "Facing the Giants" Christian movies produced by the Kendrick Brothers. Priscilla Shirer (daughter of Tony Evans) was a 2018 speaker at the Passion Conference. She starred in War Room and co-starred in Overcomer. In the production of Overcomer, BJU students not only helped in the production of the movie but one student actually appeared on screen. In a BJUToday article, there is nothing but praise for involved BJU grads and film staff. I have yet to find a single syllable of warning or disclaimer in any of the BJU literature. Don't get me wrong. We have always enjoyed these movies. We hate the rock music, but we enjoy the otherwise family-friendly nature of these films. My point here is not to beat up on the Kendrick brothers or BJU students/grads who enjoyed involvement in the production of the movie. My point is to show the total embrace by the BJU administration of the Kendrick brothers ministry - an SBC broad evangelical ministry.

The Jones family wisely maintained a safe distance from the SBC exactly because the evangelical giant was just that - broadly evangelical and badly compromised, not biblically separated. Even after Adrian Rodgers began the so-called conservative resurgence in 1979, the SBC continued to be extremely broad in its associations. Billy Graham has always been a well-loved member of the SBC. Though the SBC condemned many of his policies, Bill Clinton always remained a member in good standing in his SBC church (in spite of a grossly immoral lifestyle) and the SBC often entertained catholic clergy in its churches. Today, the SBC seems bent on reversing its conservative resurgence. In 2018, the SBC elected Dr. JD Greear as president of the convention. Watch as Dr. Greear sets forth his stance on homosexuality in the church.

Greear

At 14:50 he says, "I do want to apologize to the gay and lesbian community on behalf of my community and me for not standing up against abuse and discrimination directed towards you. That was wrong and we need your forgiveness." Greear says again' "[we must] stand up and be among the fiercest advocates for the preservation of the dignity and rights of the LGBT people..." He also admits that he has folks attending his church that work in abortion clinics.

In the 2019 SBC convention, resolution 9 was voted on and accepted. Resolution 9 contains a Marxist view on race and power structure...critical race theory/intersectionality (CRT/I). In my view, it is one of the most godless and dangerous theories in the devil's arsenal along with evolution and climate change. I believe that CRT/I is the trojan horse that will plunge the SBC back into rank theological liberalism.

Dr. Pettit, you are a teacher of teachers who teach those who will go out to teach God's people. Your praise, associations, and your silence teach very loudly. Please take to heart the warning of James 3:1
"Not many of you should become teachers, my brothers, for you know that we who teach will be judged with greater strictness" (ESV)
