BJU then and now...Global warming?!

Pettit

The "Presidents newsletter" BJU today article December 2021 says, "BJU has been awarded the prestigious Elon Musk Xprize to reduce carbon emissions in order to mitigate global warming." The article states that "Xprize-[is] the global leader in...[solving] the world's grandest problems."

Dr. Steve Pettit president of Bob Jones University (BJU) says, "We are proud of our students...winning the ($100,000) Xprize...[it] will give our students the opportunity to work on a truly innovative project with the potential to positively impact the world."

Musk

"People like Elon Musk have been saying that if excess carbon dioxide in the environment is really going to cause problems down the road, then it’s not enough just to slow down emissions,” said Bill Lovegrove, head of BJU’s engineering department. “We have to find a way to get the carbon dioxide out of the air.”

Lovegrove

By grandest problem, the article is referring to global warming. Global warming as such does not exist. However, the Bible does teach another kind of global warming. 2 Peter 3:7 describes the world being destroyed by the fire of God's judgment in response to evil human behavior. The cause of this global warming is not the result of excess carbon in the atmosphere, but rather God's response to wicked human behavior in regard to His law.

As Bible-believing Christians, we know that the world's grandest problem is our broken relationship with God and the coming judgment.

It wasn't very long ago that BJU students were taught that the way to positively impact the world was to fulfill the great commission, thereby solving the world's grandest problem. I do believe that BJU students are still taught to fulfill the great commission, but this article makes me wonder. At best I see a major shift in emphasis and at worst "the great commission" has taken on a whole new meaning.

The global warming/climate change movement is, I believe, a system of cult-like works salvation. It is built on false narratives and false correlations. Its object of worship is the created world instead of the creator. It demands allegiance and sacrafice from its worshipers. It ultimately leads to oppression and death. This is exactly the case with pagan idol worshipers for thousands of years. Biblical Christianity rescues us from global warming. Biblical Christianity and global warming cannot exist together. Each displaces the other.

What the Pettit administration is now promoting is rebuked even by secular conservatives. Can our BJU students get better and more scriptural council from secular talk show hosts and political operatives? Is Dr. Pettit more influenced by prestige and money than by scripture? In his attempt to cozy up to the conservative evangelicals has he leap-frogged right into political liberalism and pagan worship?

What we find here is Steve Pettit continuing his strategy of erasing the fundamentalist and separatist legacy of BJU. Pettit has many times aligned himself and the university with the so-called "conservative" evangelicals, doctrinal aberration, ecumenical compromisers (Franklin Graham) and opened the campus to Roman Catholicism via Abby Johnson. It makes perfect sense for Pettit steering the university into the realm of the anti-Creator movement vis-a-vis climate change hoax community. All in all we see Pettit's legacy as seeking the applause and approval of disobedient brethren and/or unsaved men rather than live in fidelity to the whole counsel of God.

I think your statement "Biblical Christianity rescues us from global warming. Biblical Christianity and global warming cannot exist together. Each displaces the other", is 100 percent wrong. The world is definitely warmer - a trend since the 1800's. That doesn't mean it is man-made (it could be partly) and it doesn't mean we even need to "solve" the problem. Maybe it is better for the world to be warmer! But to completely deny global warming and say it can't exist with Biblical Christianity doesn't even make sense to me - there is absolutely no reason why it can't. The temperature of the earth goes in cycles and this is just one particular cycle we are in. I feel you are just looking for problems with BJU that don't exist.

Natural climate cycles and global warming/climate change movement are two very different things. I do believe in natural global warming. It's called summer and it happens every year and there are years long ebbs and flow of temperatures as well. It's all caused by the sun and human activity has nothing to do with it. What BJU is espousing is a false narrative peddaled by the far left. It's a world religion designed to displace Christianity. It's modern day baal worship. I hope this helps
